Disappointed

I have used PENN products for 35 years now and had full faith in their new PENN Torque Surf Castin Rod 10' when I order it. When it arrived I was so excited and was going fishing that night with it. When I tried to fit the 2 pieces together, it was a total disappointment. The joint did not seat properly and had bad fitment. I wrote to PENN and asked if this was a regular manufacturer defect and they were less than helpful with their response. Returned the rod and will be sure to reflect my disappointment when inquired upon.

Very Pleased

I had some concern about this rod as comments about workmanship are quite common in the reviews. I handled one in a store and was impressed with the action, so I put one on my Amazon wish list. When it arrived as a birthday present, I inspected and found no defects as described in the other reviews. Hopefully, Penn will iron out the quality control issues with their suppliers.I have my rod paired with an old Abu Pro Max 6600W that I restored. Oh, my! Using 20 lb mono, it launches 3-4 oz very easily. I have mostly been using it for still fishing with cut bait. I caught a 30 inch redfish (8.2 lbs) on it last weekend. This is quickly becoming my favorite surf outfit. I am looking forward to trying it out in some other ways over the next few months.Update: 1/2013. This just gets better. I have grown more confident in loading the rod and letting it fly. I have fished the last two weekends almost exclusively with this rod. Using a 3 oz weight and a streamlined lockdown leader, I was launching my bait past the second sandbar (about 100 yards) at Surfside, Texas. The result? A new personal best redfish. I landed a 40", 29lb red on this combo after about a 10 minute fight.
