Broke on first fishing trip

I got this rod to match up with my Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 5601 C4 reel. I got the 2 piece instead of one piece because it is easier to haul it around in the trunk of the car without sticking into the rear passenger compartment.On the very first trip, I hooked a 24" Ling cod on the 2nd cast. While trying to bring the Cod in, I hear a snap and look up and my rod had snapped right where the two pieces are connected together! The graphite just fell apart into many tiny gray strands of fiber.Luckily the fish was just a few feet away from the boat and we were able to get it onboard.I tried to contact Shakespeare to get it replaced under their 7 year warranty. What a joke that warranty is. They require you to send it back to them at your expense, and then they also require you to send a $9.95 check to cover their shipping the replacement rod back to you. Given it's a irregular size, it would have cost me $15 to ship it back to them. Add that to the $9.95 they wanted, that's $25 which is more than what I paid for the brand new rod from Amazon ($24).Luckily I got this less than a month ago from Amazon, and Amazon agreed to send me a replacement free of charge and to also pay for shipping to return the defective unit back to them.Top notch customer service from Amazon, Poor warranty from Shakespeare!I hope the replacement rod won't break as easily and that it was just a random one time occurrence. People keep telling me ugly stiks are strong and durable. This is my first ugly stick and so far it hasn't been a good one. I may just have to go back to abu garcia rods and reels.

A Good Deal

Excellent rod for fishing in southern Nevada and surf fishing on the Pacific. Coupled with my Zebco I purchased I could not ask for a better combination. With free shipping it beat the local stores in overall cost too. Both products are well made.

I love this rod

I actually bought this to pair with a spincasting reel. I was really looking for the 6' pistol grip spincaster, and initially I thought I would have to return this one because I previously owned a 6'6" Ugly Stik Spinning rod, and while I love Ugly Stiks (They're nearly indestructible and I'm tough on fishing rods), I found that one to be just a little too long and awkward for me to cast effectively with the reels I had. I suspected this would be too long, heavy, and awkward to pair well with my spincasting reel (Rhino RSC3) However, this has turned out to be way better than a pistol grip spincasting rod. It may have been made for a baitcaster, but its my ultimate spincasting rod now.1, It has the action of a much more expensive rod. Baitcasting rods tend to have more "backbone" than Spinning rods, so this rod has a nice flexible tip (typical of Ugly Stiks), but most of the rod is pretty stiff. I'd swear its at least the equal of a high modulus graphite rod that costs 4 time as much. It's much less "spongy" than your typical glass rod or even your typical Ugly Stik.2, Again because its a baitcasting rod its extremely strong, even for an Ugly Stik. It has a double blank. This should be great for me as unfortunately I'm something of an expert at catching submerged logs.3, I originally thought the long (non pistol grip) handle would make for awkward casting, but instead it turns out to be even more comfortable than the typical pistol grip. The pistol grip fits my hand very well, while this leaves about 6" of the butt-end of the rod sticking out the bottom of my hand. So how is this better? The butt end of the rod naturally cradles against my forearm, which actually makes it easier and more comfortable for me to grip the rod securely and cast accurately with one hand.4, This has the strongest reel seat I've ever used. It locks into place with no play whatsoever and its the first rod I've ever owned with a reel seat that is reinforced with metal.5, I can also cast this rod for distance with 2 hands by putting my left hand on the bottom of the butt for extra leverage. I haven't had a chance to really put it through its paces, but I predict this will be my farthest casting rod ever.6, The reel guides are excellent at this price point. They're reinforced from both the top and bottom (again great for me, I tend to store rods badly and break these off, but not on this rod) and they're stainless steel with ceramic (aluminum oxide) inserts. Not the very best money can buy but great quality and able to stand up to years of use, superb at this price.7, The grips are EVA instead of cork. I couldn't tell you why exactly but I much prefer EVA. Also the very butt end of the rod has a plastic/rubber cap for added durability. Basically this is like my ultimate Ugly Stik, and Ugly Stiks are my favorite rods. Paired with my new Rhino RSC3 reel, this is my favorite fishing combo ever. (Yes this is definitely a combo for relatively casual amateurs either looking to take fairly heavy freshwater fish or else who are just experts at hooking underwater obstructions like I am, still they go together great and work great. I'm expecting to get years of pleasure out of this combo for around $60)Cons-1- This rod is definitely heavier than a similar length graphite rod would be. It's not terrible though, or anyway I don't think its terrible.2, I'm sure if you spent enough you could get a more sensitive rod with a faster action. I'm sure say a G Loomis GLX Graphite rod feels way better (not that I've ever held one), but then I'd probably break one of those within a few months and then hate myself forever because they cost like $500 even if you shop around some.

I don't even know where to begin with this rod. This is the best rod I have ever laid on my front deck. It has the strength to get a true hookset and is light enough to hold for 10 hours. Not to mention the price on these rods is awesome. I had bought one from basspro based on the name brand and looks of the rod. I enjoyed it so much I bought 4 more on amazon. When they arrived I was a little nervous because of the price differance, but let me tell you. The rods were brand new without a flaw. Packaged the same as bass pro. It's a awesome deal people. You will not be disappointed. Especially if you set a revo s on it. Down right unhealthy to be a fish.

i have two spinning and 3 casting, the casting rods all but have revo sx reels on them, the other one has a revo mgx for worming the two spinning have revo premier reels. they are extremely well balanced, light and will not let you down. i am slowling replacing my fenwick rods with these. finally abu garcia are fantastic company for customer service. they really back up their equipment. a must buy for all bass anglers a revo sx with a veritas rod, you cannot buy anything better on the market

Used it twice since it arrived. Fishing was poor, but the rod was great. Very sensitive thus easy to tell if there is something hitting the other end of the line. Worth every penny of the asking price and than some.

Good rod, and great deal

This may be the cheapest rod you can ever find. Plus, it is distributed in sportsauthority stores, about 9.99 each. So you can try them in person if you have sportsauthority nearby. Many people doubt them just because of the too low price tag, which are cheaper than many children rods. In fact, they are really decent rods. Shimano's catolog even mentions that this series is good for light salt water fishing, which it does. I mainly fish in Long Island. and no rust is found in guides after one year use.I have three FX rod, 7' 6.6' and 5'. Because of their prices, I am not forced to take much care of them. I just put them into trunk, and never worry about them. after 1 year use, there is no indication of damage. Believe me, they are sensitive, and light.I highly recommend them. Their too low prices should not be the reason keeping you from them.

This is a low end Shimano Rod. It was exactly what I needed as a pair oftrolling rods in terms of stiffness at base and flexibility at the tip.I use it for both mono and for leadcore. I also use them for bait fishingand jigging. I would not recommend them for flipping/casting as they arethick diameter and not as light on the wrist and Shimano has lots of betterrods for that. But in terms of price and quality, for my purposes,they can't be beat.

Product Description

When the bass are cruising the shallow flats and shallow creek channels in the spring you need a bait that will stay in the strike zone as long as possible yet still have enough action to entice a strike. A good choice is the soft plastic jerkbait. Our "Senko" rods are designed to fish these baits effectively for a number of reasons. longer rods create a greater casting and hook-setting radius. That means more tip-speed to initiate the hook-set and increased casting distance which is really important since the baits weigh next to nothing. It's not such a problem with the Senko or the Yum Dinger because they are the heaviest of the soft jerkbaits, but with baits like the Super Fluke, the Bass Assassin and Jerk Worm, you need a rod with a tip that will give you the ability to make nice long casts so you can cover more water, along with enough power to set the hook, even when they're out there "a country mile". We offer two levels of performance. The MossyBack rods are our mid-priced models and feature our proprietary "fiber-blend" construction with Fuji guides and reel seats. Our incredibly light and sensitive GlX models feature RECOIl guides, known for their light weight and durability, along with Fuji reel seats. There are two casting rods and one spinning rod in each series to cover all aspects of fishing soft jerkbaits. look for the "Senko" on the rod!

I bought this rod to bank fish with while im traveling and it is awesome. Its a full 7'5" to give you just a little better angle to work worms and light casting jigs with from the bank or boat for that matter. The tip and action is very fast as advertised and yet its still got enough medium heavy power to pitch baits with and pull fish from heavy cover.I wanted to carry 1 Rod and my tackle bag and get a little sun and exercise while on the road and this rod is perfect for all around use whether you tie on a senko, a light worm or jig, or rattle trap or even crank or spinnerbait. The Rod is light, sensitive and it should be for 255$.I cannot bring myself to spend more than 300$ for a rod or reel for that matter but I do like to fish with high quality products. You know youll get that with a gloomis rod paired with a shimano reel.Hope this helps someone. Sam
