Okuma Nomad travel rod
By Richard A. Neuner
The rod looks really nice and well built, but I have issues fitting the pieces together. The butt section and the middle section does not fully seat by almost 5/8 of an inch. Additionally, the medium tip does not fully seat by almost 3/8 of an inch, though the medium-heavy tip fully seats to the mid-section. I contacted Okuma service when I first got the item, they tried to contact product development and they have yet to get back to me.

Travel Rod Joints are oversized
By moosaki
I have this & 3 Balzar products. They have enough air miles on them to get a free trip anywheres. These ferrules do not fit flush. I presume it is to allow for long term wear. It in no ways compromises the integrity of the rod's flex strength. I have hooked up fish up to 100 lbs on the light action salt water version, trolled with it & landed a 55 lb sting ray with no problems. My equipment is typically superior to the charter's.

Travel Rod that feels and acts like an excellent one piece!
By Tarpon Guy
I had booked my 3rd year in a row Tarpon trip out of Hurricane Hole Marina, Key West Florida with Captain Ryan Muntin. Ryan has never let us down! The first year I got an 85lb'er. Last year my wife and I together landed a 150lb'er.On my way from Miami Ft.Lauderdale, I thought about the well worn gear he has on his boat. Its all in perfect repair, but no one is going to feel proud to use it. I thought about how nice it would be to land a great Tarpon on some sweet gear. But to be honest my success with taking my 7' or larger rods in a rod travel tube has never been without incident. When I got to Islamorada and Great American Sportsman (Bass Pro Shop), I asked William a tackle guy at their fishing gear desk if it was wrong to think of fishing for big Tarpon with a multi piece rod. I told him I had been laughed at for suggesting such a thing in the past. He said that the concern about using a multi piece rod is valid, but there are quality rods on the market now that will handle big fish. He showed me 3 rods, a low priced rod and one from St. Croix a company I respect for fly gear, and then he showed me the Nomad from Okuma. I knew of Okuma quality. The rod was beautiful! I loved the ALPS reel seat in blue anodized and the rod itself was perfect. Stainless eyelet's and two tips with multiple actions light and medium light sealed the deal. William explained that the ferrules between sections do not fit tight on purpose. It is so as they wear over the years, the rod never looses any strength. That to correctly put the sections together, line up the main section with the reel and the start each additional section at 90 degrees to straight, rotating it into place till they are straight. This way they will not pull apart and they must be twisted in the opposite direction to release. This proved very true. Matched it with a Penn Battle 6000, 50lb Power Pro and headed for Key West. Captain Muntin was initially impressed with the look of the rod, and then the fishing started. There were multiple fish early, including a 3' ray which gave the rod a workout. After that we joked that the rod was broken in and we did not have to worry about new gear jinx. When the hit came, it was 4 hours into our trip and at first it seemed insignificant. The fish took my bait and swam back toward the boat, when I detected the action and closed the bail the light/medium tip was perfect as it set the circle hook beautifully and then we were off to the races... One hour and ten minutes later, cranking up the drag in the last 25 minutes to what most would consider very tight, as this fish would not give up, had this rod bent for the entire time. There was no slippage of the ferrules, not even a millimeter of rotation. The rod had me convinced it had fused to a solid one piece during the entire fight! I could not have been more impressed and so was my friend and guide. 110lbs of angry, often and high jumping tarpon finally came to the rail. When we let it go, I just looked at the rod and then to Captin Muntin and we both looked at the rod again and said, WOW! No one, not a Tarpon fisherman, tuna, sailfish, marlin or sword guy should ever even doubt that they can use this rod. I would speculate that for any fish under 250 lbs, (and most likely bigger as well, but I can not vouch for this) this rod is going to treat you well. In the upper end of that range, perhaps the medium heavy or heavy tip would be the way to go, but if they want to use a rod that is a joy to use and look at, they should buy on Okuma Nomad. No more using over used gear for me.Tarpon Guydjpiazzo@gmail.com
