Excellent example of an Ugly Stik

If you know what an Ugly Stik is, you won't need this brief description. If not: Shakespeare uses a hybrid composite of fiberglas, graphite and epoxy to make the Ugly Stik, and these rods have been best sellers since 1976 - when I bought my first 5'6" Ugly Stik Medium Spinning Rod (and I still use it). While transmitting far more vibration (i.e. senstivity) than any fiberglas rod, they are not as sensitive as an all-graphite rod. While typically light and well balanced, they are not as light as an all-graphite rod. They are, however, nearly indestructable where any graphite rod will still break readily if mishandled (it's the nature of all carbon-fiber composites).This medium-heavy Ugly Stik Lite rod is an excellent example of all that an Ugly Stik can be. The first guide is large enough for a larger, 4000-series freshwater reel and causes no line drag that I can see, hear or feel. The handle and reel seat are in a near ideal location for good balance and excellent handling. It's a comfortable rod to use, hour-after-hour.It has the all the backbone you need to set the hook and still has the Ugly Stik trademark fast action tip making it lively and exciting to bring a fish to land.This is my first rod that is not a medium- or lighter-action and I am surprised by how much I like it. When it's not Summertime, this is the only rod I use or that I need to use for fishing on the river or in the surf.I'm serious when I fish. I used to spend exhorbitant amounts on gear and whiled away the winters building my own rods and enjoying every minute I spent customizing a rod to be an exact fit for me.I'm still serious about fishing, but now I'm more intetested in catching fish than I am in flailing the water with glitz and frou-frou. I've simplified my gear: all of my custom rods are gone, and only the Ugly Stiks (and an incredible ultra-light Fish Eagle rod) remain. I've dropped the Ugly Stiks on the rocks, I've stepped on them in the boat and on the beach; they've banged around in the back of trucks and baked in the heat of closed cars; a dog took a liking to the cork handles on the oldest rods.They're all still with me and they're still making it fun to catch fish.This is a well-designed example of an Ugly Stik and if you want a truly great rod at an affordable price, I recommend it without reservations.UPDATE: I just noted that Wholesale Outdoors and Tools is the last vendor for this item, for more than twice the MSRP from Shakespeare. This rod, while great, is not owrth a penny mor than the $59.96 MSRP. Go get it at any local B&M and skip buying it from Wholesale Outdoors and Tools. What a rip!

good rod for surf fishing

Good price for graphite rods. I paired it with Shimano 4000 spinning reel & already used it couples of times out along the shoreline of Santa Monica Bay area. It allows me to cast far enough between the wave breaks, about 10 yards distance. The rod is light weight and that makes it less tiring over hours of use. The cork handle feels nice, compared to foam handles in my other rods.
